Milo the Midnight Explorer
Every night at exactly midnight, when the house fell silent and the humans finally stopped moving around, Milo would stretch one elegant black paw through the cat flap and step into his kingdom: the moonlit garden.
To the humans it was just a garden. To Milo, it was uncharted territory, full of rustling mysteries. The fireflies were his lanterns. The old oak tree was his watchtower. And somewhere in the flowerbeds, he was certain, lived the legendary Creature That Rustles.
On this particular night, the moon was full and the air smelled of jasmine. Milo crept along the stone path, belly low, tail high โ the official posture of Serious Exploration. A firefly drifted past his nose. He crossed his eyes trying to follow it, which ruined the dignity of the moment entirely.
Then he heard it. Rustle-rustle. From the flowerbeds.
Milo froze. Every whisker pointed forward like tiny antennas. Slowly, silently, he advanced... and pounced!
Out tumbled a very surprised hedgehog, who looked at Milo with the weary expression of someone who has been pounced on before and will be pounced on again.
"Oh," said Milo, sitting down. "It's you."
The hedgehog, whose name was Bramble and who had lived in the garden for six years, nodded politely and went back to his business. Milo watched him for a while, then decided that tonight's expedition was a complete success. He had confirmed the garden was safe, greeted a neighbor, and only slightly embarrassed himself in front of a firefly.
He slipped back through the cat flap at 12:47 AM, curled up on the warmest cushion, and dreamed of tomorrow's adventure. Explorers need their rest.
